Labiaplasty

Labiaplasty surgery

Labiaplasty is a refined surgical procedure that reshapes and reduces the size of the labia minora—the inner lips of the vulva—for enhanced comfort, symmetry, and confidence. While every woman’s anatomy is unique, enlarged or uneven labia can cause physical discomfort during intimacy, exercise, or even when wearing certain clothing. In some cases, it may also contribute to irritation, hygiene challenges, or recurrent infections.

At ALT•HER NYC, our approach to labiaplasty is precise, personalized, and discreet. Dr. Albert Sassoon performs this delicate procedure to not only address functional concerns but to help women reconnect with their bodies in a way that feels empowering. Whether your goal is to relieve discomfort, restore pre-pregnancy anatomy, or simply feel more confident in your skin, labiaplasty offers a subtle yet powerful transformation.

This is not about altering who you are—it’s about ALT•ering how you feel in your body, on your terms.

What is Labiaplasty?

Labiaplasty surgery is a procedure to change the shape of and reduce the size of your labia (the labia minora), making sex and exercising more comfortable as well as possibly reducing infections, all to restore your body image and self-confidence.

Why are my labia enlarged?

Your external genitals are made of outer and inner folds, or “lips,” of delicate tissue — the labia majora and labia minora. Your labia majora is the outer fold, while your labia minora is the inner fold of tissue.

A variety of factors can affect the appearance and shape of these delicate structures, including:

  • Pregnancy
  • Aging
  • Genetics

When this happens, you may notice the folds of your labia minora hang below your labia majora, obstructing the opening to your vagina or interfering with your clitoral hood, hampering your enjoyment of sex.

Long labia may cause pain or discomfort while exercising or make you feel self-conscious in a swimsuit, affecting your self-confidence.

What is labiaplasty surgery?

Labiaplasty is a popular surgical procedure that Dr. Sassoon at ALT•HER NYC performs to correct the shape and appearance of elongated or oversized labial tissue.

In clinical studies, more than 90% of patients who’ve had the procedure reported they were extremely satisfied with their results.

If you’re interested in labiaplasty, Dr. Sassoon typically recommends the wedge technique to minimize and reshape your labia minora to achieve your desired results.

What is a trim labiaplasty?

The trim method is the most commonly used surgical approach for labiaplasty. With this method, Surgeons trim all around the labia to achieve a smaller look. Dr. Sassoon believes that most sensual feelings become greatly diminished and therefore does not hold this technique in regard. Although it’s true that the trim technique removes the darkest part of the labia, this can also be achieved with the wedge technique as well.

What is wedge labiaplasty?

A newer technique, the wedge method, involves removing a pie-shaped section of tissue from both sides of your labia minora.

Dr. Sassoon believes that even though this method is more time consuming, the end result is much more natural-looking and maintains the sensual feeling of the labia. This procedure is far more cosmetically appreciated.

Can a gynecologist do labiaplasty?

Labiaplasty, a procedure often shrouded in misconceptions, stands at the intersection of cosmetic and reconstructive surgery. It’s not just about aesthetics; it’s about comfort, functionality, and, most importantly, the patient’s well-being. This blog post aims to demystify labiaplasty, highlighting the importance of specialized expertise, the different surgical methods available, and how to choose the right surgeon for this delicate procedure.

The Need for Specialized Expertise

Not all gynecologists and plastic surgeons are equipped to perform labiaplasty. This procedure requires a detailed understanding of the female anatomy, along with specialized surgical skills. The lack of universal training in this field means that finding a gynecologist with the right expertise is crucial.

Beyond Cosmetic Concerns

Labiaplasty is often misunderstood as purely cosmetic. However, the reasons for undergoing this surgery vary widely, from physical discomfort in daily activities to medical conditions that necessitate surgical intervention. It’s important to recognize the depth and breadth of this procedure beyond its cosmetic implications.

Trim Method vs. Wedge Method

Two primary techniques dominate the labiaplasty landscape: the trim method and the wedge method. The trim method involves removing excess tissue along the edge of the labia, which can sometimes lead to an uneven, scalloped appearance. On the other hand, the wedge method, which removes a pie-shaped piece of tissue, is lauded for its more natural and streamlined results. This method is often preferred for both cosmetic and functional outcomes, avoiding the pitfalls of the trim method.

Making Informed Decisions

Choosing the right method and gynecologist for labiaplasty is a decision that should be made with care and informed understanding. Patients should seek surgeons like Dr. Sasson, who not only have the technical expertise but also a deep understanding of the functional and aesthetic aspects of the procedure. With over a decade of experience, Dr. Albert Sasson stands out as an example of excellence in the field of labiaplasty.
